Providing feedback on papers and theses requires a great deal of time and effort from instructors. Free and her colleagues are investigating how AI tools can support this feedback process. Based on several conceptual frameworks for effective feedback and writing good prompts, they are developing a CustomGPT that can be used to generate formative feedback for papers and master's theses. In this session, you will receive concrete examples, tips, and considerations if you want to get started with this yourself.

The use of GenAI as a secondary coder in qualitative research

This session will share best practices for using ChatGPT to analyze qualitative interview data. Eva will demonstrate how ChatGPT can act as a secondary coder in deductive qualitative research, showing how it supports coding, validation, and discussion of interview transcripts. The focus will be on practical steps, lessons learned, and tips for integrating ChatGPT effectively and responsibly into qualitative research.

Free De Backer is an associate professor in arts education at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where she leads the Department of Educational Sciences and co-leads the Brussels research centre for Innovation in Learning and Diversity (BILD) - a research group specializing in understanding the structural and systemic changes needed to enhance education and participation.
Eva Blondeel
Eva Blondeel is a postdoctoral researcher within the Accounting Education Research Group at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration of Ghent University. She obtained a Master in Business Economics with specialization in Accountancy and a PhD in Applied Economics at the same university. Prior to her academic career, Eva worked as a Junior Auditor at Deloitte.
Eva's research focuses on improving accounting education by encouraging students to use active learning methods to reduce procrastination. Recently, her research expanded further into the integration of Generative AI (GenAI) within accounting education and finance. She teaches courses such as Financial Accounting and Accounting in Practice and regularly conducts workshops and keynotes on GenAI applications for students, education professionals and academic colleagues. Her scholarly work has been published in multiple international journals such as Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education, The British Accounting Review, Studies in Higher Education, Issues in Accounting Education and Accounting in Europe.Expertise:

Lisa Hilte
Lisa Hilte is doctor of linguistics. For years, she worked as a linguistic researcher and lecturer at the University of Antwerp. Today, she works for VAIA as an AI expert and liaison for UAntwerp. In addition, she is a freelance writer with a focus on science journalism, and a freelance teacher in AI and language technology. She has published two sets of course materials on language technology, for pupils and teachers in the third grade of secondary education (Plantyn publisher).
