GenAI and students: what teachers really think
GenAI is a reality in lecture halls and in every student assignment. How do university lecturers in Flanders experience this rapid evolution? Three years after ChatGPT, how do they view the impact of GenAI on their teaching practices? In this webinar, Annelies Raes (KU Leuven) illustrates how we have to redesign curricula and Dimitri Mortelmans (UAntwerpen) shows how students have to be trained.

Curriculum (re)design in times of GenAI: the voice of the teachers
Annelies Raes, KU Leuven
Annelies presents new survey results from 335 education professionals across the five Flemish universities. How do they perceive the impact of GenAI on their teaching practice, and what shifts do they observe? What is becoming less important? What is becoming crucial? And how can this be translated into thoughtful curriculum (re)design? Annelies explains how the principle of ‘constructive alignment’ can support the integration of GenAI: how do you ensure that learning objectives, learning activities, and assessment methods reinforce each other? Using data and examples, she highlights the tensions lecturers experience and provides institutions with tools to help their teachers use GenAI effectively and critically, without undermining the essence of learning.

Training bachelor students in the use of GenAI
Dimitri Mortelmans, UAntwerpen
Dimitri then shows what training in AI Literacy looks like in practice. He shares how he teaches GenAI to first-year bachelor students in his course 'Introduction to Scientific Work' at the Faculty of Social Sciences. He discusses how students learn prompt engineering and how he navigates the delicate balance of teaching 'writing with AI' in a context where it is still often regarded as a fraudulent practice.

Annelies Raes
Annelies Raes is Tenure Track Professor at KU Leuven, Belgium within the Centre for Instructional Psychology and Technology. Annelies Raes holds a PhD in Educational Technology by Ghent University and worked before as a Senior Researcher at ITEC, IMEC research group at KU Leuven. Next to her affiliation to KU Leuven, Annelies Raes was Guest Professor and Chair Holder on Technology-Enhanced Learning Spaces at Université de Lille, France. Her main fields of interest are instructional design, computer-supported collaborative learning and synchronous hybrid education. In her current research program, she investigates the (new) role of the teacher in technology-enhanced learning environments.
Dimitri Mortelmans
Dimitri Mortelmans is full professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Antwerp. He teaches 'Inleiding Wetenschappelijk Werk' and is also head of the Centre for Population, Family and Health (CPFH). His research focuses on family sociology and social demography, addressing topics such as divorce, informal care relationships, and singlehood. In 2022, he was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant for the study of the life course of singles (Singleton project).
Ilse De Vos
Ilse De Vos studied Latin & Greek at UGent and obtained her doctorate in Byzantinism at KU Leuven. She lived in the United Kingdom for five years, where she worked as a researcher at the University of Oxford and King's College London. In late 2015, she returned to Ghent as coordinator of an interdisciplinary research project on medieval Greek poetry and as a teacher of Ancient Greek. From 2020, she coordinated the interfaculty honors program Think&Talk and led the Humanities Academy as director. Since 2023, she has been co-coordinator of VAIA, the Flemish AI Academy that strives to ensure that more people (can) learn more about AI.
Lifelong learning is right up Ilse's alley. Every year she takes a course somewhere, from Gothic to Learning Psychology. In 2021, she completed the Specific Teacher Education program and started Business Administration.
