When is data ‘personal’? When do you perform a DPIA? Why do some organizations have a Data Protection Officer and when should you contact him/her? Ellen Wauters (CiTiP, Knowledge Centre for Data and Society) and Brahim Bénichou (CiTiP, Knowledge Centre Data & Society) explain the basic principles of GDPR and unlock them with some handy tips and tricks. In preparation of the seminar, you can consult the privacy guidelines/policies applicable in your organization.
Teachers / speakers
Ellen Wauters
Ellen Wauters is researcher at the Center for IT & IP Law (CiTiP) of the KU Leuven. This department is part of the Faculty of Law and has more than 80 researchers who work on the legislative and ethical aspects of IT innovation and intellectual property.
Ellen Wauters holds a master’s degree in Political Science (2001) and Law (2010). She has experience in media law, intellectual property and consumer law. Before joining CiTiP, she worked as a legal expert GDPR for the social secretariat for notaries, where she was responsible for GDPR compliance in the notary profession. At CiTiP she is part of the Knowledge Centre for Data and Society and also works on the project Spectre, which focuses on smart cities.
Brahim Bénichou
Brahim Bénichou is legal researcher at the Centre voor IT & IP Law (CiTiP) at KU Leuven. He focuses on:
- the legal and ethical aspects of AI as member of the Knowledge Centre for juridical, ethical and societal aspects of artificial intelligence and data-driven applications, and on
- the application of the GDPR in both tech and SME environments.
He is also active as:
- freelance lawyer-consultant IT and privacy.
- founder of the legal tech start-up My Privacy Specialist, a legal solution that helps SME’s to implement the GDPR in a cost-effective way and tailored to their specific needs.
He obtained his law degree at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (2006 – cum laude). During these studies, he also studied at the Université Libre de Bruxelles as part of the Erasmus Belgica programme. He also obtained an LLM in Corporate Law at the KU Leuven (2010 – cum laude).
Sense & Sensibility of AI
AI has an increasing influence on our daily lives, examples include automated decision-making for high-stake decisions such as mortgages and loans, automated risk assessments for bail or recommenders on the internet. These AI systems carry the risk of creating filter bubbles and polarization. While AI is being rolled out into society, the discussion on how AI-based systems may align with and even affect our values, is pushed to the forefront. We gave the computer senses, but how can we give it sensibility? It requires a multi-disciplinary view, where both technical and non-technical perspectives have a prominent place.
In our lecture series ‘Sense & Sensibility of AI,’ we aim for Ph.D. Students to learn about the different aspects of Ethics in AI, not only to become aware of them but also to learn about the impact of AI on society and about methodologies to identify, assess, and possibly address ethical issues. The monthly seminars tackle subjects such as bias and fairness, privacy, trustworthiness, balancing technical, social, and regulatory perspectives.
The series is targeted towards doctoral students working in the broad field of AI and data science. To understand the lectures in full, it may be required to have a background in the technical aspects of AI/machine learning.
