Machine Learning in Psychiatry for Dummies

18 Nov 2021 - 19 Nov 2021

Many clinical psychiatrists have probably heard of Machine Learning, read about its possibilities to advance our knowledge and capabilities to predict diagnoses or treatment success. Yet, machine learning remains a daunting and mysterious technique. This workshop plans to change that!

During this two-day workshop you will be guided through the basics and fundamentals of Machine Learning, learn about its many applications, its inherent limitations, and finally learn to apply this to your own research as well. The goal of our workshop is that you walk away with the basic information and curiosity to start to apply Machine Learning to your own research.

To this end the organizers have invited several renowned international speakers and researchers from Belgian universities specializing in this topic, such as Nikolaous Koutsouleris, Tim Hahn, Giovanni Briganti and many more. Topics include the basics, possibilities of Machine Learning and practical applications, learning how to do the analysis, setting up a Machine Learning study, limitations of the technique and more.

They also provide the opportunity for researchers in psychiatry of the Belgian universities to get to know each other and each other’s research. They will organize a poster session where everyone can present their own research. It doesn’t matter if this research utilises Machine Learning or not. We see it as an opportunity to learn, network and possibly set up future collaborations. We’ll also organize an after-hours drink and diner on the first evening to continue in a more informal atmosphere.

Teachers / speakers

Nicolas Leenaerts

Psychiatry Resident at Sint-Kamillus Bierbeek and the penitentiary at Merksplas - Researcher at KULeuven investigating how stress leads to binge behavior in bulimia nervosa and alcohol use disorder

Maarten Laroy

I'm an experimental psychologist doing research in the field of neuropsychiatry. As a member of the Center for Neuropsychiatry at the KU Leuven, my work is mostly devoted to investigating the mechanisms behind neurostimulation and neuromodulation techniques such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). My research project aims to study the neuroplastic effects of ECT via the combination of PET-MR imaging.

Thomas Vande Casteele

Thomas is Co-founder and CEO at Awell. He is passionate about how software can help people perform at the very best of their abilities.

Kaat Hebbrecht
