Teachers / speakers

Rik Van de Walle (1970) is a senior full professor at Ghent University, former rector (2017–2025), and University Director at imec. As the founder of the Multimedia Lab (now IDLab, ~350 researchers), he built a leading research group at the intersection of internet technology, data, and artificial intelligence. He holds a master’s and a PhD in engineering physics from Ghent University, was a visiting researcher at the University of Arizona, and has served in leadership roles as dean and member of the Board of Governors. He is a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts, was twice honored in the Order of Leopold (Officer and Commander), and served two terms as president of CESAER, the European network of universities of science and technology.

As an AI expert, Van de Walle focuses on scaling data-driven and AI-driven innovation across research and industry. In his dual role at Ghent University and imec, he strengthens IDLab and the “The Brain - AI Tech Hub Ghent” initiative, emphasizing internationalization, ecosystems, and partnerships between knowledge institutions and companies, bringing AI solutions into practice faster, responsibly, and with impact.

Lieven Annemans is Senior Full Professor of Health Economics at Ghent University (and VUB) and one of Europe’s most experienced experts in Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and value-based healthcare. He has published hundreds of scientific articles and books, served as president of ISPOR, and advised policymakers and healthcare organizations on cost-effectiveness, access to innovation, and patient-centered outcomes.

As an AI expert in healthcare, Annemans focuses on evidence, ethics, and the economic value of AI applications: when algorithms truly deliver health gains, how to integrate them responsibly into clinical workflows, and how to assess their price-quality ratio. He advocates robust, quantitative evaluation frameworks for AI in healthcare so organizations can scale safely and efficiently.

Petra De Sutter has served since 1 October 2025 as Rector of Ghent University; she is a medical doctor–gynecologist and Professor of Reproductive Medicine. Previously, she was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Administration, Public Enterprises, Telecommunications and Postal Services (2020–2025) in the federal De Croo government, following earlier mandates in the European Parliament and the Senate.

She combines scientific excellence with policy experience in digital transformation, with a strong focus on inclusion, ethics and innovation. In her academic and leadership roles, she promotes lifelong learning and the responsible use of AI and data, emphasizing skills development, evidence-based decision-making and societal impact.

Ignaas Devisch is a professor of medical philosophy and ethics. He is also an author and columnist and provides consulting services on ethics and philosophy for both businesses and individuals.

He is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at Ghent University and publishes and speaks regularly at home and abroad, addressing both specialized and general audiences.

Lecturer in health law at Ghent University, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Department of Public Health and Primary Care.
