Rethinking higher education curricula and competences in the (gen)AI era
How do you develop a faculty-wide framework for digital literacy, and what challenges and outcomes come with it? How can AI be integrated into the curriculum in a participatory way to prepare students as critical and constructive users? In this webinar from our “Peers & Prompts” series, Margo Dewispelaere (UGent) and Liesbeth De Donder (VUB) explore how we need to rethink curricula and competencies to implement AI literacy.
Learn from colleagues how they use AI tools to support and adapt their daily work, education, and research.

Digital Competencies for Healthcare Professionals
Margo Dewispelaere, UGent
The ongoing digitalization of healthcare served as the starting point for developing a faculty framework for digital literacy at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. During this session, Margo will explain the process used to develop the faculty competencies, the challenges encountered along the way, and the results achieved. She will conclude with a look at the plans for the coming academic year, during which concrete materials will be developed to support programs in implementing this curriculum.
AI integration in the curriculum: Educational Sciences
Liesbeth De Donder, VUB
How do we train our students to become AI-smart alumni, educators who can use AI critically and constructively in their future professional fields? This is the approach of the educational project Liesbeth and colleagues from the Educational Sciences program are working on. The goal: to investigate whether, and especially how, AI can be integrated into the curriculum. Students, alumni, lecturers, and external experts are involved through a participatory approach involving workshops and focus groups. Liesbeth shares initial experiences and explains the steps in this process, discussing the resulting generic and domain-specific competencies and how these are being integrated into the curriculum.

Liesbeth De Donder is Professor of Educational Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), where she is responsible for the courses "Community Development and Participation," "Care, Ethics, and Inclusion," "Educational Perspectives on Social Work," and "Thesis Seminar." Liesbeth is the director of the Society and Ageing Research Lab, where she leads the research line "Care and Caring Neighborhoods."
