Introduction to Survival Analysis with exercises in R

15 Feb 2024 - 21 Mar 2024

The course starts with explaining the concepts of left and right censoring and truncation, and with introducing the concepts of survival function, cumulative hazard function, hazard rate and mean residual life function. Next, the Kaplan-Meier estimator will be derived and its various properties will be studied (Greenwood formula of the variance, confidence intervals, quantiles, redistribution-to-the-right principle,…). The course also discusses (weighted) log-rank tests for the comparison of two or multiple survival distributions. In the second part of the course two common classes of regression models will be discussed. The first one is the semi-parametric Cox proportional hazards model, which will be studied in much detail (partial likelihood, handling of ties, testing procedures, variable selection, stratification, time-varying covariates, diagnostic plots,…). The second class of models is the parametric accelerated failure time model.

Ingrid Van Keilegom is Professor of Statistics at the KU Leuven since 2016 and part-time professor at UCLouvain. She received a B.S. degree in mathematics (1993) from the Universiteit Antwerpen, and a master in biostatistics and a PhD in statistics (both in 1998) from the Universiteit Hasselt. She has held positions as professor at the Pennsylvania State University (1998-1999), Eindhoven University of Technology (1999-2000), and UCLouvain (2000-2016). She is programme director of the Master of Statistics and Data Science programme since 2020. Her main research areas are survival analysis, measurement errors, quantile regression, non- and semiparametric regression techniques, causal inference, instrumental regression, and mathematical statistics. She has been joint editor of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society-Series B (2012-2015), and is Fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. She received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of A Coruña in Spain.
