Ethical AI culture: governance & acceptable use in business
With all the new opportunities popping up in the world of Artificial Intelligence, companies need to establish a robust governance for AI. This requires a multifaceted approach that includes awareness and knowledgeability of the workforce and of clients, ethical considerations, and acceptable use policies. Organisations also need to be in sync with European and national regulations. Ongoing monitoring and auditing of AI systems facilitates accountability, transparency and compliance with ethical standards, thus fostering trust among stakeholders.

14:20 (in English) User story: VDAB’s AI strategy for career enhancement
Since 2020, VDAB has been expanding the scope of its support from (solely) job seekers, to every citizen in his/her career. This meant an increase in the number of clients from around 200,000 job seekers to the active population of Flanders, about 4,000,000. And that kick-started innovation using data and AI. With AI, VDAB can process the data to recognise structures and patterns. The insights and applications gained will be used to support and improve VDAB’s and partners’ services. VDAB set up an Ethics Council to ensure a correct and ethical development and use.
Karolien Scheerlinck, Manager AI Center of Excellence, Department I&T, VDAB

16:00 (in English) User story: Curbing night noise while respecting everyone’s privacy
Night noise in a vibrant student city like Leuven has an impact on the quality of life in the city. The city of Leuven has implemented sound sensors that can classify noise as disruptive, and in real time. By using different technologies such as IoT and AI, the city can get a better view over the problem and its causes, while at the same time preventing it at the moment it is happening. This data can also be re-used to take and evaluate preventive actions, all while adhering strictly to privacy and other regulations.
