How to increase AI Literacy in your organisation? Answer: training programmes and a learning culture

04.12.2024

From February 2025, AI literacy is mandatory under the European AI Act. How do you deal with this in your company? Nadja Desmet of Someflex provides some tips on how to have a good training programme and a suitable learning culture.

AI Act Article 4: AI Literacy

Article 4 of the European AI Act requires organisations to ensure an adequate level of AI literacy among their staff from February 2025.

The law does not specify what measures should be taken, so companies and organisations must develop their own strategies to meet the needs of their employees.

AI literacy means that employees need to understand:

  • the workings of AI,
  • potential opportunities and risks
  • the potential impact on the organisation and individuals.

How do you ensure AI Literacy in your company?

Start with a training programme that matches your employees’ roles and responsibilities! Some options to consider:

  • AI scan: Start by evaluating the current knowledge level of your team members to identify their learning needs and tailor training courses accordingly.
  • Basic AI training: Offer training courses that provide a broad understanding of AI, tailored to the different levels of expertise in your organisation.
  • Targeted AI training: Provide training on specific AI tools and applications that can be used in your employees’ daily work.
  • Raising awareness: Organise workshops and seminars to raise awareness of the ethical and legal aspects of AI use, so that potential risks are recognised and addressed in a timely manner.
  • Lifelong learning: Encourage a culture of continuous learning so that your team always stays on top of the latest developments and best practices in AI.

By investing in AI literacy, you make sure your organisation meets the legal obligations, while also increasing the effectiveness and safety of AI applications. Additionally, you reap the benefits of AI faster and better.

The AI Act requires organisations to ensure an adequate level of AI literacy among their staff and others who operate and use AI systems on their behalf from February 2025.

Tips for fostering a learning culture:

Because AI and its tools change rapidly, the knowledge acquired in the various training programmes ages quickly. Besides classical learning, teams should also be granted the opportunity to constantly update their knowledge and skills. This creates a culture where innovation is encouraged to increase productivity and to keep employees motivated.

  1. Integrate learning into daily work: Encourage employees to apply new knowledge directly to their tasks and make room for ‘learning on the job’.
  2. Offer various learning resources: Provide access to complementary learning resources, such as online courses, live workshops or tailored coaching so that employees can learn in various ways, according to their own learning needs and capabilities.
  3. Create a safe learning environment: Encourage experimentation and provide a culture that accepts mistakes and recovers them as learning moments.
  4. Set clear learning goals: Work with employees to set personal development goals and support them in achieving them (e.g. via a salary bonus).
  5. Recognise and reward learning efforts: Recognise employees who are committed to their development, e.g. through internal promotion opportunities or special recognitions.
  6. Encourage knowledge sharing: Organise sessions in which employees share their knowledge and experiences with other colleagues. This helps to get everyone involved, while also encouraging transparency about the knowledge available in your team.
  7. Managers, set a good example: Managers who actively learn and share their own experiences (and make mistakes!) inspire employees to do the same.
  8. Provide a permanent supply of new knowledge: As technology and AI develop at lightning speed, it is crucial to continuously bring new knowledge into your organisation.
  9. Embrace technological solutions. There are e.g. online learning platforms and digital tools to make learning more accessible to the whole organisation, so that everyone can learn at his/her level of knowledge. By using a platform, you can pass on the need for updates to the supplier and respond more quickly to new developments and innovations.
