Programme
Day 1 : Chip fabrication and the chip ecosystem
During the first day you get acquainted with chip fabriaction. We start from the the raw materials and cover how chips are fabriacted through the different processes and layers. Also chip bonding and packaging will be covered while the day will be closed with a session on the chip ecosystem.
Day 2: The transistor and analog chip design
On the second day, you will be introduced to the main building block used in chip design: the transistor. In the afternoon, analog chip design, is introduced.
Day 3: Mixed-signal chip design and hands-on
On this third day, the lectures will cover mixed-signal chip design. In the afternoon, hands-on sessions allow you to exercise the analog chip design principles.
Day 4: Digital chip design from basics to architectures for AI
During the 4th course day you will be immersed in digital chip design. We will start from the basic elements and stepwise expand are systems towards larger architectures used for Artificial Intelligence (AI). A hands-on session allows you to apply the basic digital design principles.
Day 5: Introduction to RF chip design, evalution and lab visit
On this last course day, the lectures cover an introduction to RF chip design. Chip design for higher frequecies, allowing 5G communication, faces new challenges, as will be discussed today. In the afternoon, the evaluation will take place and there is also time for a lab visit.
Evaluation (day 5)
Participation in the evaluation is not mandatory. Students that follow all the classes will receive a "certificate of attendance". Students that also pass the evaluation will receive a "micro-credential certificate", issued by KU Leuven.
The evaluation will be based on a individual examination (multiple-choice) including questions from the different lectures.
Lesgevers / sprekers
Marian Verhelst
Marian Verhelst is a professor at the MICAS laboratories of KU Leuven and a research director at imec. Her research focuses on embedded machine learning, hardware accelerators, HW-algorithm co-design and low-power edge processing.
Georges Gielen
Georges G.E. Gielen received the MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium, in 1986 and 1990, respectively. He currently is Full Professor in the MICAS research division at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) at KU Leuven. From August 2013 till July 2017 he was also appointed at KU Leuven as Vice-Rector for the Group of Sciences, Engineering and Technology, and he was also responsible for academic Human Resource Management. He was visiting professor in UC Berkeley and Stanford University. Since 2020 he is Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering.
His research interests are in the design of analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits, and especially in analog and mixed-signal CAD tools and design automation. He is a frequently invited speaker/lecturer and coordinator/partner of several (industrial) research projects in this area, including several European projects. He has (co-)authored 10 books and more than 600 papers in edited books, international journals and conference proceedings. He is a 1997 Laureate of the Belgian Royal Academy of Sciences, Literature and Arts in the discipline of Engineering. He is Fellow of the IEEE since 2002, and received the IEEE CAS Mac Van Valkenburg award in 2015 and the IEEE CAS Charles Desoer award in 2020. He is an elected member of the Academia Europaea.
