50 Years of Computer Science
In 1974, KU Leuven celebrated the graduation of its pioneering computer science students. Now, in 2024, we look back at the profound impact computer science has had on our lives and we contemplate its future developments.
Throughout 2024, a series of lectures will illuminate our research spanning the past, present, and future. These sessions will delve into the evolution of computer science and its role in shaping society. Moreover, we extend an open invitation to the public to engage with us during the Open Company Day on October 6, 2024, offering the public a chance to explore and understand our research activities firsthand.
Practical information:
An early start
In 1974, the first-ever group of students graduated with a KU Leuven computer science master's degree. Just 17 pioneers made up that groundbreaking class. This program was a standout in Europe. It was created by professors from the Applied Mathematics and Programming section and run by the Faculty of Applied Sciences. Interest in the field grew fast. By 1981, the Computer Science Department had been founded. Six professors and 21 researchers were on board, eager and enthusiastic to advance this young discipline.
50 years later
Today, the department spans nearly 400 staff across 8 campuses throughout Flanders. Its research significantly influences and shapes the content of 13 educational programs spread across 3 Faculties: Engineering Science, Engineering Technology, and Science. As the number of educational programs expanded, so did the student body. Over 2,000 students are currently enrolled in programs where the Department of Computer Science plays a pivotal role, solidifying its status as one of the larger departments within the KU Leuven Group of Science and Technology.
The research spectrum within the department is remarkably diverse, covering nearly all current computer science research domains. This breadth places us in a unique position within Europe, much like we were half a century ago. The transformations over the last 50 years have been immense, not just for the department but also for the field of computer science itself. As crucial topics like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and quantum computing are on the rise, it is vital to reflect on our progress to date and envision how far computer science can go.
That is why, in 2024, we are celebrating what we have achieved, and why we are looking forward to identifying what is coming next in the fast-paced world of computer science.
