Exciting news: the Knowledge Centre Data & Society is celebrating its fifth anniversary! We will not let this milestone pas unnoticed: be sure to mark 28 January 2025 in your calendar for our celebration. On that day, we will reflect on our accomplishments over the last five years and look ahead to what the future holds. You will beintroduced to what the Knowledge Center Data & Society has to offerin a variety of ways.

  • As the AI Act is gradually being implemented, questions arise about the practical implementation. Are companies equipped with the right tools, or are their resources falling short? Flemish citizens and AI: Should everyone embrace AI? (NL)
  • A significant number of Flemish citizens either do not know what AI is or claim to never use it. Yet, AI systems directly or indirectly impact everyone, and AI tools can create substantial value, even on a personal level. Should every Flemish citizen be included in the AI narrative, and if so, how do we best achieve this?

  • The AI Flanders program has been running for five years. What have we achieved as a small region, and where do we aim to go in the next five years? This session takes a broader view of the program to project ahead to 2030 and explore what will have been reached by then.

AI playbooks: What do we need and what is already in place? An overview of methods for embedding AI innovation in an organisation. (EN)
  • Artificial intelligence is hailed as a groundbreaking innovation that it demands a new organisational approach. In this panel, we will ask whether this is truly the case and examine the practices required to innovate responsibly with AI in an organisational context.

Helen Tueni

Helen Tueni is the founder of Vucable, a consultancy specializing in digital transformation. With over 15 years of experience in digitalization, she has led projects across various sectors, including public affairs, energy, insurance and education. Holding a Master's degree in AI for the public sector, she is also the creator of mAIté, a GovTech solution that enhances accessibility to public services using AI.

Jens Meijen

Jens Meijen is a PhD researcher at KU Leuven and a Fulbright Fellow at Stanford University working on AI regulation. He is also a team leader at the Center for AI and Digital Policy, a Global Policy Fellow at the Institute for Technology & Society in Rio de Janeiro, and an AI consultant.

Expertise: AI ethics and responsible AI; AI startups and venture capital; AI regulation (AI Act); AI and democracy

Angeliki Tiligadi

Angeliki Tiligadi is a privacy lawyer and DPO at Qover, an InsurTech company based both in Belgium and the UK. She holds an Executive Master’s in Law and AI and she is CIPP/E certified. She is also a member of the European Data Protection Board Support Pool of Experts for legal and technical expertise in new technologies. Recently, she has been appointed as a Global Leadership Network Coordinator for regulated sectors in AI Governance for the WiAIG.

Cédric Gilissen

Anna-Carolina Zuiderduin

Anna-Carolina Zuiderduin (1993) werkt als beleidsadviseur bij de Strategic Foresight unit van de Technische Universiteit Delft. Hiervoor werkte ze 2.5 jaar als toekomstonderzoeker bij Stichting Toekomstbeeld der Techniek in Den Haag. Hier rondde ze onder andere een toekomstverkenning af naar de toekomst van werk in relatie tot technologie. Ze is afgestudeerd als techniekfilosoof aan de Universiteit Twente.

Willemien Laenens

Willemien Laenens is project- en communicatiemedewerker bij het Kenniscentrum Data & Maatschappij. Het Kenniscentrum is de centrale hub voor maatschappelijke, juridische en ethische aspecten van datagedreven toepassingen en AI. Ze ondersteunt organisaties in het praktiseren van ethische waarden in innovatieprojecten, en focust hierbij onder meer op het betrekken van werknemers bij innovatieprocessen.

Thomas Gils

Thomas Gils is a research associate at CiTiP involved in the Knowledge Centre Data & Society. He is responsible for the Knowledge Centre's policy monitor and policy prototyping initiaves. As part of his tasks at the Knowledge Centre, he informs Belgian and Flemish stakeholders (incl. policy makers, companies, public institutions and civil society) about the legal aspects of data-driven and AI applications. In addition, he has contributed to the development of legal frameworks (incl. the AI Act) and guidelines at various levels. His latest research focuses on the transparencyrequirements under the EU AI Act. Thomas has been interviewed by several important Belgian newspapers (De Tijd, De Morgen& De Standaard) and the Flemish public broadcaster VRT.

Finally, Thomas has given guest lectures on several topics at various institutions (incl. KULeuven, Vives, American Univeristy and Universita di Bologna).

Peggy Valcke

Peggy Valcke is full professor of law & technology at KU Leuven and vice dean for research at the Leuven Faculty of Law & Criminology. She is executive committee member at CiTiP and Leuven.AI, and principal investigator in the Security & Privacy Department of imec (previously iMinds). She has taken up positions as visiting and part-time professor at Tilburg University, Bocconi University Milan, the European University Institute in Florence, and Central European University in Budapest. In January 2024, she joined the executive board of the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications (BIPT – IBPT).

Peggy’s current research focus lies with the rise of artificial intelligence technologies, and in particular algorithmic decision-making, in law enforcement, transport, media services, the judiciary, etc., and the ethical-legal implications thereof, especially in relation to human rights and the allocation of responsibilities / legal liabilities.

Jessica Godoy Chaparro

Jessica Godoy Chaparro is a legal expert (attaché) in the Digital Economy department of the Federal Public Service Economy. As part of the team coordinating the AI Act implementation in Belgium, she works on various topics such as the national governance structure and AI regulatory sandboxes. In this role, she also coordinates the Belgian nomination within the AI Board (sub-groups) and represents the country in numerous EU-meetings regarding AI policy. Prior to this, she was involved in the preparation of the Belgian position during the negotiations of the act and during the trilogues that were finalized during the Belgian presidency of the Council of the EU.

Ralf De Wolf

Ralf De Wolf is professor Nieuwe Media Studies bij imec-MICT en lead onderzoeker verbonden aan het Kenniscentrum Data & Maatschappij. Hij is gespecialiseerd in sociaalwetenschappelijk onderzoek naar privacy, surveillance en data-gedreven technologieën. Voor het Kenniscentrum Data & Maatschappij is hij verantwoordelijk voor de jaarlijkse AI-monitor.

Neena Singh

Neena Singh is projectcoördinator bij het Kenniscentrum Data & Maatschappij. Ze richt zich voornamelijk op het amai!-project, dat als doel heeft om AI te demystificeren en groepen met beperkte datawijsheid te bereiken.

Binnen amai! coördineert Neena de dagelijkse activiteiten en bouwt ze samenwerkingen op met media en andere instellingen om een breder publiek te bereiken.

Neena werkt ook mee aan het Falling City-project, waar ze via artistieke interventies de impact van technologie op stedelijke omgevingen onderzoekt.

Giulia Mazzocchi

Giulia Mazzocchi is junior onderzoeker bij imec-MICT-UGent en werkzaam bij het Kenniscentrum Data & Maatschappij. Binnen het Kenniscentrum werkt ze aan de jaarlijkse AI-Monitor, die de houding en percepties van Vlamingen ten opzichte van datagedreven technologieën in de samenleving onderzoekt.

Alenka Le Compte

Alenka Le Compte is medewerker digitale inclusie bij Kenniscentrum Mediawijs. Ze coördineert verschillende netwerken en bijeenkomsten in Vlaanderen, zoals de Taskforce digitale Inclusie die publieke actoren, non-profitorganisaties en de academische wereld samenbrengt.

Sabine Demey

Sabine Demey is the director of the Flanders AI Research Program. She brings together researchers from 10 research partners in Flanders (universities and research centres with imec as coordinating partner). Together they tackle challenging AI Research Challenges and apply the new AI methods in healthcare, in industry 5.0, for the energy transition, in society. She believes it is important for technological developments such as AI to have a meaningful impact on people, industry and society. Sabine is a computer scientist with a PhD in robotics. She has 20+ years industrial experience in research, product and business development in 3D printing, software for the manufacturing industry and for healthcare.

Ilse De Vos

Ilse De Vos studied Latin & Greek at UGent and obtained her doctorate in Byzantinism at KU Leuven. She lived in the United Kingdom for five years, where she worked as a researcher at the University of Oxford and King's College London. In late 2015, she returned to Ghent as coordinator of an interdisciplinary research project on medieval Greek poetry and as a teacher of Ancient Greek. From 2020, she coordinated the interfaculty honors program Think&Talk and led the Humanities Academy as director. Since 2023, she has been co-coordinator of VAIA, the Flemish AI Academy that strives to ensure that more people (can) learn more about AI.

Lifelong learning is right up Ilse's alley. Every year she takes a course somewhere, from Gothic to Learning Psychology. In 2021, she completed the Specific Teacher Education program and started Business Administration.

Rob Heyman

Rob Heyman is coördinator bij Kenniscentrum Data & Maatschappij.

"Hoe meer we gedigitaliseerd leven, hoe meer we gepersonaliseerde beslissingen krijgen op basis van onze informatie." Heyman heeft als doel bloot te leggen hoe deze dingen werken en mensen te laten begrijpen wat er met data gebeurt. Hij vindt het merkwaardig dat er zo weinig bekend is over data in het tijdperk van big data. Zijn methode bestaat erin het verborgen leven van gegevens bloot te leggen door deze processen in kaart te brengen in licht verteerbare teksten, scenario's en visuals. Vervolgens gebruiken hij en zijn team co-creatiesessies om de huidige praktijken in kaart te brengen met de verwachtingen van eindgebruikers, regelgevers of vernieuwers.

Annelies De Corte

Ik ben sinds 2016 werkzaam bij KPMG Technology Advisory, waar ik voornamelijk werk voor KPMG Lighthouse, ons Center of Excellence voor Data, Analytics, AI & Intelligent Automation. Ik heb een passie voor data en het oplossen van problemen. Ik heb een academische achtergrond, met een PhD in Operations Research en ervaring op het gebied van statistiek, kunstmatige intelligentie en data analytics. Ik heb ervaring op het gebied van data & informatie management, data strategie & transformatie en advanced analytics. Mijn technische achtergrond is van grote waarde als het gaat om het oplossen van zakelijke uitdagingen met datagedreven oplossingen.
