The basics of AI

AI is an umbrella term for technologies that enable machines to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. This is done by processing huge amounts of data and using sophisticated algorithms to recognise patterns and make decisions. AI systems learn from experience, meaning they get better at their tasks over time. How does AI exactly work? We’ll explain some of the basics.

How does an AI system learn?

Most AI systems use machine learning to learn: a model is trained with large (sometimes huge) amounts of data. This is done in three steps:

  1. Data collection: Large amounts of relevant data are collected – figures and text, but also photos, vides, chemical codes, GPS codes, etc. Anything can be data.
  2. Training: Algorithms are unleashed on the data so that the system learns to recognise patterns and relationships.
  3. Validation: The model is tested with new data to check whether it performs effectively, adjusting the algorithm and testing again, adjusting and testing again, adjusting and...

What is the difference between an algorithm and AI?

An algorithm is a set of instructions that a computer follows to perform a task. AI also uses algorithms, but it goes a step further by enabling these algorithms to learn and adapt without being explicitly programmed for every possible outcome. AI can thus independently recognise patterns and make predictions based on the data it processes. An AI system also gets smarter the more it is used.

What are the different types of AI?

AI can be divided into three main categories, taking humans as the frame of reference. And as powerful as computers are, a human is still unmatched: because we can perform a very diverse set of tasks, such as holding an intelligent conversation, doing maths, riding a bike, folding laundry, watching the traffic... AI systems are a long way from doing so many different tasks in one system.

Weak AI

Narrow AI (Weak AI)

This AI is designed for specific tasks. Examples include AI chatbot ChatGPT, voice assistant Google Assistant, image generator Stable Diffusion, and more. While these technologies appear smart, they can only match one of the many tasks a human can perform.

Strong AI

General AI (Strong AI)

Also called ‘Strong AI’. Like a human, this AI can learn and think about different subjects. This type of AI does not exist yet, but many AI researchers are aiming to reach this ultimate goal. By combining existing technologies, such as ChatGPT, robotics, speech and image generation, this technology seems not so far off. (Not to be confused with GenAI or generative AI in which the AI system produces original content).

This is a hypothetical AI that far surpasses the intelligence of humans. It is a subject of much speculation and debate, and of particularly fascinating fiction!

What does the future of AI look like?

Hard to say! The future of AI is promising and diverse. AI is expected to play an increasing role in various sectors such as healthcare, transport, education, and entertainment. Innovations such as self-driving cars, personalised medicine and smart cities are just a few examples of how AI can transform our world.

AI is a powerful tool that can fundamentally change the way we live and work. By better understanding the technical aspects of AI, we can be more aware of the opportunities and challenges this technology presents. The EU AI Act (Artificial Intelligence Act) is the world's first legal framework for artificial intelligence. It addresses AI-related risks to ensure safe, reliable, and transparent AI usage while respecting fundamental rights and values in Europe.
