Are you worried about the ecological footprint of your GenAI use? Is your organisation currently implementing GenAI? Join us for the next meet-up of the Learning Community 'AI and ethics in practice' on December 10 to discuss the ecological sustainability of GenAI. How can we make sure to gain the benefits of GenAI in the long term, while mitigating the negative effects as much as possible? Experts Eric Mannens and Alexandra Papageorgiou will share their view and best practices in a testimonial and we also invite you to share your knowledge, experiences and questions during the discussions.

This gathering of the learning community is a collaboration between the Knowledge Centre Data & Society and the SustAIn.Brussels initiative. The meeting will take place in Brussels, Belgium. This will be an offline meeting, online participation will not be possible.

Who is this learning community for?

The Learning Community 'AI and ethics in practice' focuses specifically on the application of ethics and social aspects in the development, implementation and use of data and AI applications. We therefore focus specifically on professionals who are in practice, in their daily work, dealing with ethical and social issues surrounding data & AI.

Erik Mannens

Erik Mannens is an independent AI expert (bridging the Knowledge gap from Research to Industry), Keynote Speaker & author of the book "Sustainable AI" (see: sustainable-ai.be), and both Professor @ UAntwerp (Sustainable AI) and @ Ghent University (Semantic Intelligence).

The last 20 years I have successfully managed +160 "interdisciplinary" projects (amounting +50M euro of Funding for my teams) and managed teams of 50 to 125 researchers. I received my PhD degree in Computer Science Engineering (2011) at UGent, my Master’s degree in Computer Science (1995) at K.U. Leuven & my Master’s degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering (1992) at KAHO Ghent.

Being 50+, from now on I tend to only take on new projects who will have a positive & lasting impact on Society and "Spaceship Earth" as a whole! #SustainableDevelopmentGoals ... As such, I took on the Operational Lead of SOLID Lab Flanders for a year in 2022 and headed UAntwerp's IDLab for two years where I guided them into the Sustainable AI realm. Me and my team won the OpenMinds 2023 Diversity Award for our inclusion workshops & the OpenMinds 2024 Sustainability Award for our Climate Fresk workshops.

Alexandra Papageorgiou

Alexandra holds two masters in European Law and European Law and Litigation from the University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas, with a focus on digital and cybersecurity EU policies. She will soon be finalising an LLM in IT/IP law at the KU Leuven (campus Brussels), where she is focusing on regulatory sandboxes under the AI Act.

Prior to joining CiTiP Alexandra worked as a trainee lawyer and as a legal researcher in the area of corporate governance. Alexandra is predominantly involved in the UPCAST and TANGO projects.

Rob Heyman

Rob Heyman is coördinator bij Kenniscentrum Data & Maatschappij.

"Hoe meer we gedigitaliseerd leven, hoe meer we gepersonaliseerde beslissingen krijgen op basis van onze informatie." Heyman heeft als doel bloot te leggen hoe deze dingen werken en mensen te laten begrijpen wat er met data gebeurt. Hij vindt het merkwaardig dat er zo weinig bekend is over data in het tijdperk van big data. Zijn methode bestaat erin het verborgen leven van gegevens bloot te leggen door deze processen in kaart te brengen in licht verteerbare teksten, scenario's en visuals. Vervolgens gebruiken hij en zijn team co-creatiesessies om de huidige praktijken in kaart te brengen met de verwachtingen van eindgebruikers, regelgevers of vernieuwers.
