Sam Verboven is an assistant professor in AI at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where he is part of the Data Analytics Lab.

His research is in causal machine learning — specifically causal effect estimation: moving from models that predict what will happen to models that estimate what would happen under an intervention. He develops methods for recovering these effects, including how they vary across individuals, and combines them with policy optimization to turn the estimates into decisions.

He applies this work in finance, HR, marketing and healthcare, and teaches data science and business informatics at VUB.
