AI lessons for SMEs: practical tips
Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs, in Dutch: kmo’s, kleine of middelgrote ondernemingen) face challenges and opportunities in embracing AI technologies. How can we improve the AI learning pathway for these companies? For VAIA, technology strategist Kevin D’hooge gathered insights and suggestions to make the learning process about AI even better.
What do SMEs ask for?
1. Use specific examples from the industry
SMEs want to see specific examples and case studies from their own sector. These practical applications of AI show how the technology can be used to improve their business.
2. Use of visual aids
Infographics and videos are powerful tools that can make complex information more understandable. SMEs indicate that these visual tools help them better understand and visualise the potential of AI.
3. Offer personal guidance
Personal guidance is essential for SMEs. Understanding the technology and implementing AI applications requires continuous support and guidance, as AI is constantly evolving.
4. Show where to find financial support
There are risks involved with getting started with AI in an SME. Financial support can lower the barrier and encourage SMEs to integrate AI into their business.
Demand articulation, a survey of the AI learning needs of Flemish SMEs
Since VAIA’s founding in 2020, our staff have been asking everyone about their learning needs regarding AI. ‘What do you, or what do your employees, want to learn about AI?’ We discovered that most people and companies struggle to articulate their need: by now everyone knows that artificial intelligence is important, but how should it be used and what for?
In response, VAIA decided to offer support a stage earlier in the AI learning process and help SMEs formulate their demand. We organised a ‘Demand articulation’ survey in which we talked to 100 SMEs with 2 to 100 employees. Together we established where they encounter obstacles and how the learning process can be defined more clearly.

This research was conducted by Kevin D’hooge, technology strategist, and market research firm Buffl, at the request of VAIA and on the initiative of the Flemish Council of Universities of Applied Sciences and Arts.
Why adapt AI training courses to SMEs?
These tips are not just suggestions. They stem from the specific challenges and opportunities that enterprises face when adopting AI.
Communication and comprehensibility
The language and approach of existing pathways often do not match the needs of SMEs. Jargon and technical terminology make the information impenetrable.
Need for practical applications
Abstract pathways lack the practical applications that SMEs need. Instead, they need directly applicable insights and examples relevant to their business operations.
Specific needs of SMEs
SMEs have unique challenges and require pathways tailored to their specific needs. An approach that matches their business context is essential to successfully adopt AI.
Financial barriers
The cost of implementing AI within SMEs can sometimes add up quickly. Financial support can lower this barrier and encourage innovation in these companies. One way to reduce costs is to build up enough knowledge in advance so that there are no false expectations.
These points highlight the need to review, personalise and adapt learning pathways on AI to the unique needs of SMEs.
