Summer Academy for Global Privacy Law 2022
Join us for the 2022 Summer Academy for Global Privacy Law which will focus on the EU data governance reform, as illustrated in the five regulatory instruments 👇, each found at various stages of a law-making process. Each regulatory text will first be placed within its proper background and ecosystem, before analysing its regulatory approach and (still draft) provisions. Particular attention will be paid to its relationship with specific aspects of the EU data protection law, particularly with the GDPR.

The adoption of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was the major piece in the EU data governance framework. In order to complete this framework EU policymakers have been busy drafting amendments to existing laws and proposing new legal measures to respond to the realities of data economy. In this context, the European Commission has most notably put forward the following regulatory proposals:
- Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council laying down harmonized rules on Artificial Intelligence (Artificial Intelligence Act)
- Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on contestable and fair markets in the digital sector (Digital Markets Act)
- Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on a Single Market For Digital Services (Digital Services Act) and amending Directive 2000/31/EC, COM/2020/825
- Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on European data governance (Data Governance Act)
- Proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on measures for a high common level of cybersecurity across the Union, repealing Directive (EU) 2016/1148
Anticipating the adoption of these documents and their significant impact on compliance matters for businesses, we plan on reflecting on the regulatory architecture of data governance in the EU, placing a particular emphasis on questions of coherence, comprehensiveness and effectiveness.
