The pandemic has revealed the strategic importance of chips. A shortage of chips leads to economic slow-down and chip-supply dependencies lead to geo-political tensions.
However, shortage of technical skilled people that know how to design and develop a chip is a much bigger problem. While the Flemish region is worldwide at the top in designing and developing chips, there are currently over 500 vacancies in the Flemish chip industry. Companies have extreme difficulties in finding and keeping talent. A broad offer of training courses for reskilling and upskilling the workforce is essential to keep and strengthen our leading position.
In this course KU Leuven gives an introduction on chip design. The course will give a broad view on the topic starting from the materials and processes that are used over circuits made of transistors towards chips that create artificial intelligence (AI). The course offers both theoretical and hands-on sessions.
