Teaching as Training: Iterative and Incremental AI Skill Development

Higher education must equip students with skills for complex, multidisciplinary challenges. Traditional approaches relying on fixed deadlines and traditional exams often limit opportunities for growth and continuous skill development. Kirs Luyten presents an iterative and incremental teaching method, applied for five years in a row in a master-level Computer Science course on Human–AI Interaction. His approach emphasizes formative feedback, collaborative learning, and individual progression. Students work on group assignments and an individual project, with no strict deadlines and unlimited opportunities during the semester to resubmit until a "pass" is achieved.

Hoe bouw je een curriculum voor jobs die nog niet bestaan, in een wereld die sneller verandert dan accreditatieprocessen toelaten? Thomas Desmedt stelt de vraag die niemand hardop stelt en deelt hoe de opleiding Digitale Innovatie haar antwoord zoekt. Niet door simpelweg AI toe te voegen als vak, maar door AI te gebruiken als aanleiding voor een fundamentelere vraag: wat moet een afgestudeerde écht kunnen? Over kritisch redeneren als kerncompetentie, brede digitale basisvaardigheden als toekomststrategie, een T-shaped profile professional en waarom de tool altijd "just the tool" blijft.

Thomas Desmedt is opleidingshoofd Digitale Innovatie aan HOGENT, de grootste IT-opleiding van Vlaanderen. Hij schrijft een master-thesis over digitale transformatie en de socio-technische kloof in organisaties. Als keynotespreker staat hij regelmatig op podia voor bedrijven, overheden en erfgoedinstellingen over AI, futureproof skills en waarom digitale transformatie mensenwerk is en geen platforminstallatie.
Hij gelooft dat de grootste uitdaging van het AI-tijdperk niet technologisch is. Het is de vraag wat we willen dat mensen kunnen als de tools opnieuw veranderen.
